Our long-established cricket club promotes excellence in the core skills and principles of the sport, while imparting a lifelong love of cricket to all pupils.

The Uppingham School cricket programme has a clear purpose and vision: “To become a powerhouse of independent schools’ cricket, contributing to the development of future professional cricketers whilst instilling a lifelong love of the game in the whole Uppingham community.”

Uppingham School Cricket Club has a deep and rich history and currently fields 12 teams throughout the summer term for both boys and girls.

Our philosophy is to build players’ confidence and self-esteem by improving their core basics and their understanding of the key principles of the game. Through our process-driven approach, we believe in enabling players to develop the best self-understanding and awareness possible, so they can think clearly for themselves and the team. We aim to provide as many players as possible with an individual player development plan.

Coaching

Uppingham has two full-time dedicated cricket staff: our cricket professional, Trevor Ward, who is an ex England A, Kent and Leicestershire player, and our director of cricket, Rob Taylor, who is an ECB Level IV specialist coach, a former professional cricketer with vast experience coaching both men's and women's cricket.

Facilities

The 1st XI play all of their home matches on The Upper playing field; a magnificent cricket ground with its own thatched pavilion and separate block of grass nets. The Middle playing fields house a further six cricket squares, used for both training and matches, and there is a new state-of-the-art net training facility. Our 19 grass cricket lanes give Uppingham’s cricketers the best possible opportunity to train for match situations. Indoor nets are also available in the sports hall at USSC.

Competitions

Our match programme is comprehensive throughout the age groups, and overseas tours are organised every two to three years. The summer fixture card includes block matches against other schools at all ages, with the 1st XI also hosting in-day fixtures for the Old Uppinghamians, The Marylebone Cricket Club (MCC) and Leicestershire Gentlemen. We also enter a number of national boys’ competitions. In school, we run inter-house competitions for the Overs and Unders Cups.
